I think I’d need to put this one down in the fail column. I think I did okay 2-5 days a week for the next few weeks, but I totally failed to blog it so I don’t even know. It certainly hasn’t stuck - I am back to just coffee most mornings.
Day 5 was teh suck again, as I woke up with no appetite and only ate half a bowl of instant oatmeal before work. This, despite being up and making it an hour before I had to leave and despite using a much tastier brand name type of oatmeal. But I did get up early and make it, at least.
Day 6 and 7 were the weekend and I slept really late, so I only had an hour or two of official morning to work with. Both days I managed to get up and make and eat some eggs within an hour, so that’s pretty good.
One of my hopes is that this month helps get me into a habit of waking up earlier - thus far I really haven’t seen that happening. I’m really sort of working on breaking several bad related habits here: staying up too late, sleeping too late, late night eating/snacking, having nothing but coffee for breakfast most days (and lunch some), and generally living an relatively unhealthy lifestyle. I think that forming a habit of waking early and cooking and eating a healthy breafast could be a huge positive step.
One big positive is that this morning I thin I’ve finally figured out a good egg-cooking routine that includes washing dishes while I cover the eggs and wait for the cheese to melt. If I can be certain that I can cook stuff in a short time and not leave a big mess, I’m more likely to go ahead and do it, so this could be a big deal.
I think February’s Experimonth is perfect!
My biggest obstacle to breakfast is an inconsistent bedtime. I’m too tired after waking up to have any appetite at all which usually results in a bowl of oatmeal or a bagel around lunchtime. Alternatively, I’ll wake up at the very last possible moment after which I’m too rushed to bother.
That said my *favorite* way to prepare oatmeal is to make it stovetop with only a sprinkling of cinnamon. I like to mash half a banana in the bottom of the bowl and then pour the piping hot serving of oatmeal on top and stir it all up. For what it’s worth, I completely agree that instant oatmeal counts— stovetop oatmeal takes way longer than the promised two minutes. Liars. Today I had instant oatmeal. The high fiber cinnamon swirl stuff. It’s not too sweet so I prefer it to the other flavors.
The good news is there are a lot of delicious hot breakfast options. I’m really looking forward to things like eggs and pancakes this month too. And crepes! Mmmm. :)
So question: do toasted bagels count?
i went for the oatmeal again today, but had to reheat it twice before I was finally able to eat some. even then, I only ate 1/3 of the bowl before I had to get to my 9:30 meeting. my morning note to self was that drinking too much the night before throws off my appetite. upon a bit of reflection, it should also be noted that email, twitter, etc will encourage me to disregard eating until the last possible moment, which is probably not healthy. i did go back and reheat and eat the rest of the bowl, out of a guilt/hunger combo meaning that I had the remainder of my breakfast at 11:30 and just had lunch at 3:30.
Tuesday, Feb 2 was a second instant oatmeal day (switched to maple and brown sugar from apple cinnamon), since I was not eager to try to make it to the grocery store through all the ice and snow. I was bad in that I didn’t make or eat this until being up for a couple of hours - still morning, but definitely not first thing.
This morning, I was again awake for over an hour before eating. I did a bit more actual cooking, though: scrambled eggs w/ chopped portobello, red onions and a bit of mozzeralla on top.
I stood in the kitchen pondering whether oatmeal should count as cooking and eating a hot breakfast. It’s instant, so it’s not really much cooking. But I tend to skip breakfast 5 days a week, on average, so I decided that I will allow instant oatmeal to count, but no more than 4 days a week. as always, make your own rules then just be honest about your progress.
This will be the official site for February’s experimonth 2010. In 2009, @10ch was challenged to eat dinner with family each night. In 2010, I’ve been challenged to eat a hot breakfast daily.
